In order to be a member of the Hidden Valley Ski Team, a USSA membership is
required. Membership costs for Team members 12 years old and younger is
$70 for a Youth Competitor license. Those Members 13 and older who are not
racing USSA may obtain a Non-Scored Student license for $90. Those Members
13 and older who are racing USSA must obtain a Competitors license for $140.
Age is determined as of Dec. 31st of the current race season. Go to the
Application and Forms page for a USSA application.
USSA sponsors races for each sex based on age classes or ability. The age
classes are in two-year increments. The classes are: J-5 for ages for 10 and
under, J-4 for ages 11-12, J-3 for ages 13-14, J-2 for ages 15-16 and J-1 for
ages 17-19. Age is determined by the age on Jan 1st of the current race
season. Racers are awarded points for any race using a formula too
complicated to explain. Suffice it to say that, as in golf, the lower scores
represent higher achievement.
The USSA Central Division (CUSSA) is divided into Regions. We are in Region 2.
CUSSA and Region 2 sponsor about 5 national races and 5 international class
(FIS) races, mostly in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (about a 13 hour drive
from St. Louis). Some are by invitation only; all are seeded to give priority start
position to the best racers. The more advanced of the HVST racers participate
in USSA races.
Parents should consult with the coaching staff for guidance on whether a racer
has developed to a level to benefit from USSA competition. The approximate
cost for USSA racing, over and above the Competitor's license, are a +/-$300
Central Division registration, $25-$40 per race day for lift tickets, plus motel
and transportation costs, as well as more $'s for high performance equipment
and race suits. In addition, CUSSA requires a $200 deposit which will be
rebated at the rate of $25 for each day a parent works at one of the races.
