WIJARA Racing
"WIJARA is an acronym for the Wisconsin-Illinois-Iowa Junior Alpine
Racing Association. WIJARA races are held primarily in northern Illinois
and Iowa and southern Wisconsin."
In order to race WIJARA, a racer must be a member of a team. HVST will register a
team of racers in early December. WIJARA sponsors races for each sex in two-year
age classes. These classes are: J-6 for 8 and under, J-5 for ages 9-10, J-4 for ages
11-12, J-3 for ages 13-14, J-2 for ages 15-16 and J-1 is for ages 17-18. Age is
determined by the age on Jan 1st of the current race season. Racers accumulate
points for finishing in the top ten in any race. Racers and teams with the highest
points receive special recognition. No USSA points are awarded for WIJARA.
Approximate costs for WIJARA racing are $30 for WIJARA registration ($40 after
Dec. 5th), $20 for a bib (if you don’t already have one), $35-$50 per race day for
lift tickets, plus motel and transportation costs." Parents can carpool and share
motel rooms to reduce costs. HVST sometimes reserves a block of rooms, but you
must call to confirm the rooms by the deadline or the reservation will be
cancelled. WIJARA races are for Travel Team members, but a Development Team
member can race in one WIJARA race by paying a $75 fee, in addition to the fees
outlined above.
If you want to be registered to race WIJARA you need to send a WIJARA
Registration Form and WIJARA payment to Mike Rector, who will prepare the team
roster, before December 5th. Payment will be the $30 WIJARA registration fee
($40 after Dec. 5th) and, if you don't have a bib from last year, an additional $20
for a bib. Bibs are required to race. Before participating in any race, you must also
furnish a WIJARA Release Form for that race. If you intend to race all 4 races, then
4 copies of the form are required.
After December 5th, registration will cost $40, and must be done at least ten days
ahead of the race in which you intend to participate. No racers may be registered
for WIJARA after February 1st.
In addition:
(1) SKI Helmets are mandatory. Helmet must be a USSA compliant helmet. NO
helmets with soft sided ear covering.
(2) Parents are expected to assist in running the races. HVST, and other teams, are
assigned various duties for the races. Be prepared to spend at least portions of
one day each weekend standing in the cold alongside a race course.
If you need more information, feel free to talk to Mike Rector, or any of the other
coaches or parents who went to WIJARA races last year
